1972年馬科斯獨裁政權宣布實行軍事戒嚴法,開創了菲律賓最血腥的時代,數以千計的人被逮捕、拘禁,遭受酷刑甚至“被失蹤”。前后在菲國掌權20多年,直至1986年被推翻政權。而在2016年的菲律賓全國選舉中,馬科斯之子小馬科斯競選菲律賓副總統,由于菲律賓學校教科書中馬科斯政權的內容未被提及,40%的選民對戒嚴法一無所知。
用當時的幸存者、記者來對戒嚴令時代的想法進行了采訪,在接受采訪時,采訪者開始自我介紹,并透露他們是戒嚴令的幸存者,同時講述了他們在馬科斯的戒嚴令期間所遭受的不公正的監禁、酷刑等可怕經歷。這段視頻在選舉前一周發布,并在上傳當天獲得超過100萬次訪問量。它被各種新聞媒體報道,一周內訪問量高達500萬人次。此后,小馬科斯的支持率持續下降,小馬科斯最終以最微弱的差距輸掉了這場比賽。更重要的是,在2016年菲律賓參議院教育部門宣布了一項新的課程,以反映戒嚴令殘虐行為。
