Smart（精靈）汽車有限公司作為戴姆勒-奔馳的全資子公司成立于1994年，管理中心設在德國斯圖加特市，生產工廠則在相距不遠的法國海姆巴赫市。作為汽車界巨擘戴姆勒公司和瑞士鐘表集團斯沃奇（Swatch）合作的產物，似乎從一開始就決定了Smart與眾不同的特性。Smart是梅塞德斯－奔馳（Mercedes-Benz）汽車公司和世界手表業巨頭斯沃琪（Swatch）公司創意合作的產物，字母S代表斯沃琪公司，M代表梅塞德斯公司，而art是藝術的意思，在英語中Smart有靈敏、聰慧的意義。
smart中的S代表了斯沃奇(Swatch)，M代表了戴姆勒集團(Mercedes-Benz)，而art則是英文
smart（精靈）汽車(10張)中藝術的意思，合起來可以理解為，這部車代表了斯沃奇和戴姆勒合作的藝術，而smart車名本身在英文中也有聰明伶俐的意思，這也契合了smart公司的設計理念。
