夏普的歷史是從創始人早川德次先生1912年在東京創立金屬加工業開始的。1915年早川先生發明了名為“Ever-Ready Sharp Pencil”的金屬活芯鉛筆，這在當年可謂風靡一時。這就是現在的夏普公司名稱及商標的由來。之后，夏普相繼開發出日本首臺礦石收音機、黑白電視機以及世界首臺全晶體管電子計算器等產品，逐步發展成為生產家電產品、通信設備、還有太陽能電池及液晶面板、LED、LSI等電子元器件的綜合型電子廠商。
夏普自創業以來，始終以通過開發獨有技術，開創獨一無二而獨具特色的商品，創造新市場需求為社會的發展做貢獻作為發展目標。
在中國，夏普描繪著長遠的宏偉藍圖，與時俱進發展著事業。夏普在中國正式開始設立工廠時的方針是：
（1）集中投資區域；
（2）1家工廠多品種的生產模式；
（3）率先進駐開發區內發展。
根據這三個方針，夏普1992年率先在上海市浦東新區直接投資設立了第1家生產據點，之后相繼在上海市及江蘇省的常熟市、無錫市、南京市設立了生產據點。
